Salinas Salt Lake Experience
The volcanic landscape of Sal provides a very special geographical feature – the salt lakes of Pedra de Lume. These lakes – or ‘salinas’ – are located in the crater of an extinct volcano and form the lowest point in Cape Verde.As you enter the waters, you won’t have to paddle too hard to stay afloat – the waters are 26-times denser than sea water, so you’ll bob around in them like a cork. The Dead Sea is just 10-times denser.Soaking in this natural wonder isn’t the only serene activity on this afternoon excursion – you’ll be treated to a wonderfully relaxing spa treatment in the Salinas spa centre before you brave the salty waters. Bring a towel, though – you’re going to want to shower all that salt off you before returning to Santa Maria.

There’s no better way to get a feel for Santa Maria than by getting into its skin with this all-encompassing walking tour. Your guide will point out the historical sights of Vila da Santa Maria, while you get to sip on your cool beer, taken straight from the on-board tap. This afternoon tour shines the spotlight on the real Espargos, as seen through the eyes of a local. You’ll kick off with a tour to three historical spots, then have a drink in a bar before the main event – a traditional dinner with live music at a local’s house.You’ll be taken to Sal’s capital, Espargos, for an afternoon of culture, history and some traditional food. A walking tour will introduce you to the city’s history at three stops – the first airport on the island, the first hotel and the first sanitation place. You’ll drop in a local bar for a drink, where some old photos of Espargos and Sal will be on display.Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you’ll be welcomed into a local’s house for dinner. You’ll be told how all the dishes are made, which includes cachupa – a type of Cape Verdean stew with either fish, chicken or vegetables. Live music will add to the atmosphere, too, leftover food will be offered to a family in need.
